How to download a YouTube thumbnail

Three honest methods: use the desk on this site, build the CDN URL yourself, or export the file you already uploaded in Studio. None of them download the video.

Method 1 — Paste into ThumbUHD

Open the HD thumbnail downloader. Paste a watch, Shorts, embed, or youtu.be link. The desk extracts the ID, asks oEmbed for the title, and probes every public size. Download the card that shows real pixels. If you have a list, use bulk ZIP.

Method 2 — Build the URL by hand

Get the 11-character ID (how). Visit:

https://i.ytimg.com/vi/YOUR_ID/maxresdefault.jpg

If the image is huge and sharp, save it. If it is a tiny broken-film icon, try hq720.jpg, then hqdefault.jpg. Right-click → Save image. This is the same pattern tools have used for years. The site exists because checking eight filenames by hand is tedious and because placeholders fool people.

Method 3 — Your own upload in Studio

If you uploaded the custom thumb, YouTube Studio still has it. Download from there when you want the original PNG you sent, which may be slightly different from the JPEG YouTube published on the CDN.

Method 4 — On iPhone or Android

Which file to save (HD first)

1. maxresdefault.jpg — typically 1280×720 when live
2. hq720.jpg — another HD JPEG on many videos
3. sddefault.jpg — 640×480
4. hqdefault.jpg — 480×360, almost always exists

What not to do

Do not run a “YouTube to MP4” site and screenshot a frame if all you needed was the official still — that is a different, often sketchy product. Do not trust a button labeled 4K UHD unless it shows measured width. Do not grab someone else’s still for ads without a license. Read using thumbnails legally.
