YouTube Shorts thumbnails: 16:9 files, 9:16 screens

Shorts look vertical. The custom thumbnail YouTube hosts is usually the same 16:9 family as long-form. Design the middle, or the shelf will crop your punchline.

Same ID, same filenames

youtube.com/shorts/ID is a player skin around the same video object as watch?v=ID. maxresdefault.jpg is still the HD still when it exists. The Shorts downloader frames that file in 9:16 so the crop is obvious.

Where to put faces and text

Keep the subject in the center third. Avoid important type on the far left and right — those edges vanish on the shelf. Duration and UI still eat corners. Use the safe-zone preview on a Shorts URL the same way you would on a long video.

Auto stills on Shorts

If you never uploaded a custom thumb, YouTube’s four auto frames are often a random beat from the take. They may be 4:3 letterboxed. Upload a 1280×720 custom if you care what the shelf shows. See custom vs auto.

How to design a Shorts thumbnail that survives the crop

  • Start from 1280×720, same as long-form.
  • Put the face on the vertical center line.
  • Use 1–3 huge words, not a sentence on the left edge.
  • Preview in the safe-zone tool and the Shorts downloader.

A Short that also appears as a long video on the watch page will show the full 16:9 still there. You are designing one file for two crops.

FAQ

Questions people actually type

What size is a YouTube Shorts thumbnail?

You still upload 1280×720 (16:9) in Studio. The Shorts player and shelf crop toward a 9:16 window. There is usually no separate 1080×1920 CDN file.

How do I download a YouTube Shorts thumbnail?

Paste youtube.com/shorts/ID into the Shorts downloader or the homepage. Save maxresdefault if it exists. The file is the same family as long-form.

Is a Shorts thumbnail 9:16 or 16:9?

The published custom still is almost always 16:9. Display on the Shorts shelf is a 9:16 crop of that still. Design the center column.

Can I upload a vertical 1080×1920 Shorts thumbnail?

Studio’s custom thumbnail slot is still the 16:9 spec. A tall file will be fitted into that slot, not published as a separate 9:16 master on i.ytimg.com.

Do Shorts use maxresdefault.jpg?

Yes, when HD exists. Same filename as a long video. youtube.com/shorts/ID and watch?v=ID are the same video object.

Why do the sides of my Shorts thumb vanish?

The shelf crops toward the middle. Type on the far left or right is the first casualty. Keep faces and short words in the center third.

Are auto-generated Shorts thumbnails different?

They are the same 0.jpg–3.jpg family, often 480×360. Upload a custom 1280×720 if you care what the shelf shows.

Does a youtu.be link work for Shorts stills?

Yes. The ID is enough. Share parameters like si= are ignored.
