How to save a YouTube thumbnail on iPhone or Android

You do not need an extra app. Copy the link from YouTube’s share sheet, paste it in a browser, and save the largest real still. Same files as desktop — maxres when it exists, HQ when it does not.

Copy the YouTube link on your phone

  1. Open the video or Short in the YouTube app (or in youtube.com in a browser).
  2. Tap Share.
  3. Tap Copy link. You will get something like:
https://youtu.be/VIDEO_ID?si=……
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID

The si= junk does not matter. This site ignores it. If you want a tidy URL for Notes, run it through the link cleaner later.

Save a YouTube thumbnail on iPhone (Safari)

  1. Open Safari (not the YouTube in-app browser if it blocks downloads).
  2. Go to the HD YouTube thumbnail downloader.
  3. Paste the link. Tap Get HD thumbnails. Wait for the pink loading bar to finish.
  4. Tap Download on the size with the biggest real pixels (often labeled maxresdefault, about 1280×720).
  5. If Safari asks, choose Save Image to put it in Photos. Otherwise open the Files app → Downloads and move it to Photos yourself.

Long-press the preview image if Download is awkward: Add to Photos or Save to Files. That still saves whatever size is on screen — prefer the HD card, not a tiny HQ preview stretched full-width.

Download a YouTube thumbnail on Android (Chrome)

  1. Open Chrome.
  2. Open the same homepage downloader.
  3. Paste, tap Get HD thumbnails, wait for results.
  4. Tap Download. Chrome stores a .jpg in Downloads.
  5. Open the Files or Downloads app to share it into Google Photos, Drive, or WhatsApp.

If a download is blocked, check Chrome’s download permission for the site. This desk does not need the YouTube app’s storage permission.

YouTube Shorts thumbnails on a phone

Paste a youtube.com/shorts/… link the same way. The file you save is usually a 16:9 JPEG. The Shorts player crops toward 9:16, so edges disappear. To see that crop before you save, use the Shorts thumbnail downloader. Design notes: Shorts thumbnail sizes.

Why the saved image looks small or blurry

  • You tapped HQ (480×360) instead of maxres (1280×720).
  • The video never published maxres — older uploads and some auto-only thumbs. The size checker will say so.
  • A site labeled the file “4K UHD” but served HQ. This downloader prints measured pixels so you can ignore the adjective.

Honest cap: what 4K / UHD actually means. Desktop methods (including building the URL by hand): how to download a YouTube thumbnail.

No app, no account, no video file

You are saving a public JPEG from i.ytimg.com. You are not downloading the video. You do not log in here. History of pastes stays in this browser’s local storage until you clear site data. Rights still belong to the uploader — save stills you may use: using thumbnails legally.

FAQ

Save YouTube thumbnail on phone FAQ

How do I save a YouTube thumbnail on iPhone?

Open this site in Safari, paste the Share link from YouTube, tap Get HD thumbnails, then tap Download on the size you want. Use Save Image if Safari offers it, or hold the preview and save to Photos.

How do I download a YouTube thumbnail on Android?

Open this site in Chrome, paste the share URL, tap Get HD thumbnails, then tap Download. Chrome saves the JPEG to your Downloads folder. From there you can share it to Photos or Drive.

Do I need an app to download YouTube thumbnails on mobile?

No. A browser is enough. Third-party “thumbnail downloader” apps often add accounts, ads, or video ripping. This page is the same free desk as desktop.

Why does Save Image look blurry on my phone?

You may have saved hqdefault (480x360) instead of maxresdefault (1280x720). Pick the card that shows the largest real pixels. A 4K video still does not give a 4K thumbnail.

Can I save a YouTube Shorts thumbnail on my phone?

Yes. Paste the youtube.com/shorts/ URL. The file is usually 16:9. The Shorts player crops it. Use the Shorts downloader if you want to see that crop first.

Where does the thumbnail file go on iPhone?

Safari may put it in Downloads or offer Save Image into Photos, depending on version and settings. Files app → Downloads is the usual fallback if Photos does not show it.

Does this work in the YouTube app?

The YouTube app has no “download thumbnail” button for other people’s videos. Use Share → Copy link, then paste into this site in Safari or Chrome.

Is it legal to save a thumbnail on my phone?

The JPEG is public. Copyright stays with the uploader. Save stills from your own channel, licensed work, or a genuine fair-use purpose.
