Preview a YouTube thumbnail (safe zone on a phone)

A still that looks huge in Studio can lose the face under a title bar. This preview puts the published image in a phone frame with overlays so you can judge the crop before you ship.

Paste a URL to preview the still

Watch, Shorts, embed, live, youtu.be, music, or an 11-character video ID.

What the YouTube thumbnail safe zone is

On a phone, YouTube draws duration, progress, and often a title on top of your still. The “safe zone” is the middle of the 16:9 image that still reads after those UI chrome pieces. Put faces and 1–3 words there. Leave the bottom and far edges quieter.

This is not YouTube’s official pixel grid. It is a practical overlay so you do not upload a thumb that only works on a 27-inch monitor. Longer notes: thumbnail safe zones.

How to preview a YouTube thumbnail before upload

  1. Upload a draft custom thumb in Studio (unlisted is fine).
  2. Paste the watch or Shorts URL here.
  3. Look at the phone frame. If the face is under the title, move it up in your design file and re-upload.

Need the 9:16 crop specifically? Open the Shorts thumbnail downloader. Need two options side by side? Compare.

Title overlay vs your type in the image

If the video title is already burnt into the JPEG, the in-app title will stack on it. Pick one: either a quiet still and a strong title, or type in the image and a short Studio title. This preview makes that clash obvious.

FAQ

YouTube thumbnail preview FAQ

What is a YouTube thumbnail safe zone?

The center of the 16:9 still that still shows after YouTube draws a title, duration, and progress on a phone. Faces and short words belong there. Edges get covered.

How do I preview a YouTube thumbnail on a phone?

Paste the video URL here. The still is shown in a phone-shaped frame with fake title and timestamp overlays so you can see the crop before you upload.

Do Shorts use the same safe zone?

Shorts crop harder toward a 9:16 column. Use this preview plus the Shorts downloader. Keep the face in the middle third of the 16:9 master.

Should I leave empty space at the bottom of a thumbnail?

Yes, if the title overlay on mobile sits on the lower third. Do not put the only readable word on the bottom edge.

Can I preview maxresdefault vs hqdefault?

This preview uses the best still that exists (usually maxres or HQ). For a pixel table, use the size checker. For A/B of two videos, use compare.

Does YouTube show my custom thumbnail on every surface?

Home, search, and suggested use it. Some embeds and older widgets still use HQ. Test the surfaces you care about.
